Free Swimming In Croydon!

As of June 1st, free swimming is now available for children who are under 16 years of age and living in the London Borough of Croydon.

To register children must simply visit their local leisure centre, complete a registration form and purchase a membership card for £2.

OLYMPIC DREAMS FOR SELHURST SHOT PUTTER

Khalil Njoya is in with a shot of putting Britain on the map in a sport which it hasn't been successful in since the days of strongman Geoff Capes.

The 13-year-old Selhurst School pupil is the second best shot putter of his age in the country and is dreaming of one day becoming an Olympic champion.

Coloma In Double Win!

Congratulations to Coloma, who ran out winners in the recent Croydon Secondary Girls Football competition this term.

The competition, held each week at the Goals 5-a-side Centre in Elmers End, has been running since October and included teams from Harris Crystal Palace, Coloma Convent, Riddlesdown, Addington High, St Mary’s High, Westwood High, Warlingham High and Coulsdon High.

Nationwide family fitness programme runs into Croydon

Run for the Children, (www.runforthechildren.co.uk) the nationwide family fitness initiative will be hosting its inaugural 3k family fun run on Saturday, the 13th October

2007 at Coombe Lodge Playing Fields, Croydon. This family fun run is open to children, parents, families and friends of all ages and abilities and you can choose to run, jog or walk. 

Run for the Children is a unique initiative which encourages families to take part in fitness together and provides a healthy eating and fitness programme full of tips on healthy living. To ensure a fantastic day, Run for the Children has teamed up with the Croydon School Sports Partnership and Sport England’s Sporting Champion and former British Olympic athlete Judy Oakes OBE who will start the fun run and encourage the participants on their way around the course. It is also supported by the Youth Sport Trust, the MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do-It) programme and celebrity children’s food author, Annabel Karmel.  

The fun run will start at 11am at Coombe Lodge Playing Fields, Melville Avenue, South Croydon and follows an easy course. Fun runners will also be raising lots of money for Run for the Children’s partner charity, CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA. Elaine South, South London Competitions Manager, said: “Run for the Children is a fantastic and fun event aimed at getting the whole family active and promoting a healthy lifestyle. It’s great to see young people jogging alongside their parents, family or friends and I encourage everyone to enter and make the commitment!"

Medals will be awarded to all participants on the day and all finishers are invited to send their photos of their great achievement to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for inclusion in Run for the Children’s online picture gallery. 

If you enter early, entry is £1 for children (4 to 15 years inclusive), with an £8 fee for adults or £15 for a family ‘saver’ comprising 2 adults and up to 3 children.  There is also a special teacher rate which offers free entry for teachers who bring along up to 5 children each.  Fun runners can enter online at www.runforthechildren.co.uk or www.runnersworld.co.uk or pick up entry forms at local schools as well as leisure centres, doctors’ surgeries and libraries.
